In the centre of Africa, 4,800 ft above sea level lies Rwanda’s deepest body of water, Lake Kivu. Keeping a dark secret, Lake Kivu’s bed sits upon a rift valley that is slowly being pulled apart, causing volcanic activity in the area. The sixth biggest lake in Africa, Kivu is one of the fresh water lakes in Africa’s Great Rift Valley and sits on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The tourist board has labelled Rwanda the Land of a Thousand Hills. From the volcanoes, to the jungles that house a third of the world’s remaining gorillas, to the largest rainforest in Africa, Rwanda has a history of environmental conservation. The tiny, landlocked country ripples with steep, terraced hillsides. Forward thinking and empowering, Rwanda is one of the safest countries in Africa, which is emerging as an economic force on the continent.
These qualities are epitomised in the high-tech efficiency and clever planning of its capital, Kigali. Clean streets, well manicured green spaces and friendly people make this an ideal place to visit.
